Become A Virtual Bookkeeper
Posted: 09 Jul 07 10:32 PM

Hello,

Michelle (co-owner of Smart Moms) recently wrote an blog entry on becoming a Virtual Bookkeeper.  As you probably know Bookkeepers are in large demand with the small business owners.  Many small business owners are looking for an alternative option to paying a CPA $100/hr to do general bookkeeping.  With the right training, certifications and experience you can create a steady income with 5-6 clients. Read the blog entry - Virtual Bookkeeper and view our recommended list of bookkeeping online classes to get started.

If there is anyone starting a virtual bookkeeping business and would like encouragement or direction please post to the forum.  I would be happy to provide additional direction.

If you have started a bookkeeping business and would like to share how it is going, pitfalls to avoid, etc.  Please post!!

Garla Smith

I was a stay at home mom desperate for something to give me something to keep me sharp and give me some extra money. I went looking around for home based business. Most of them were jobs where I promoted someone above me and took money for others below. My husband did not like those. I looked at home jobs where I had to pay a fee to start. Again, my husband did not go for that. I realized I had some old videos that needed to be sold. I listed them on Amazon.com. I was so excited when I sold my first video. I learned the hard way that it did not need to be in a box to be shipped. The shipping prices barely covered that. Bubble wrap envelopes was the way to go. Then I had to look for them in bulk. The local post office knows me very well. By the end of the month, I had an inventory of 30 items. Then I visited Craigslist and bought more videos and DVDs. Then I went to garage sales. I bought about 60 videos. This was by the Christmas of 2006. By Christmas 2007, I had moved into books, textbooks, music sheets, CDs, and other stuff. That total was 3200 items. I had bought a lot of books that had over 8000+ that was supposed to open up a library in Peru, but things happened, and I bought the books for roughly $.15 a piece.  I am learning how to build in the risk. Some books I trash, some books I don't sell, some I need to clean up a little, and others I sell as well as I can. I was trying to sell at the lowest price, but now I don't sell below $.75. I am also on Alibris.com and Half.com. I like to use these to compare prices. Some books are a real find when I can sell them at $45 - $200 used. I am also selling music for my cousin who is a professional classical musician, Julia Muench Lakhani. I have bought from friends, family, and strangers. This is the biggest crap shoot I have ever experienced, but I love doing this. I always loved movies, books, and music.  I improved my shipping practices this year by mailing by PayPal. For $.18 more on the shipping, I can get a Delivery Confirmation Number.

If you are interested in buying my books, DVDs, Videos, and CDs, you can look for me at http://www.amazon.com/shops/ncseller08 . If you have anything that you want to sell, please email me at jmlaney@nc.rr.com. I would gladly help anyone with any questions. This is still a creation in process.
