Going Back To Work

Dear Garla and Michelle,

"This was an absolutely fantastic opportunity for me professionally. This job allowed me to get my feet wet again in the technical communicationasianwoman.JPG profession. After six years at home with my kids, I am ready to return to full-time work in my field. But the majority of the feedback I received when sending out resumes was that my skills were out of date. Basically, "what have you been doing for six years?" The project I received through Smart Moms allowed me to show that my skills are still relevant and to put that all important recent experience on my resume. Additionally, the project was challenging and I felt good about myself and knew I still 'had what it takes'."

E-book Career Guides are a great resource for exploring new fields. They examine more than 100 fields and give you the inside scoop on the job.  You'll find out what it is really like on the inside, what skills are required, how to get into the field, and how to set yourself up for success.

Could you use a free resume template? How about free cover letter samples?

If you’re wondering if your skills are up to date, we can help with assessments of both interests and capabilities. Assessing your skills, especially computer skills, is important because often we think we know more about a particular software than we really do.  Do you know how many words per minute you type? A speed typing test is a great way to evaluate your typing speed for data entry, paralegal or transcription work.

We provide access to career coaches who work mainly with women going back to work after children. Explore new ideas with a coach.  Let them help you view things in a new light. Brainstorm and see what you learn about yourself and what you should be doing. You will find information on online classes to get you up to speed or help you acquire new skills. You can get help re-writing or updating your resume and we provide a free resume template.  Our free cover letter samples provide guidance for writing effective cover letters.

You’ve been a stay at home mom for a few years now. You are starting to think about getting back out there.  You may even be ready for a full-time job but you feel like you have been out of your field too long and so much has changed in the industry that you can’t re-enter.  Maybe your field hasn't changed much but they are just not hiring people who haven't worked for a while.  Or, during your time away from your career you realize that you'd rather do something new, but what? This is the situation facing most women considering going back to work after children.

If your field is greatly affected by technology, policy changes or other advancements, being out for even a few short years can make your skills obsolete.  If you didn't keep up, move ahead with changes and seek training you just can't re-enter at the level you once held.  Few people manage that while staying at home. So, as you make the decision to re-enter, you'll need to figure out which of your skills are still relevant.  Find out what new skills you need to acquire.  Make a plan for reentry.  We'll address that more completely in a moment.

Let's say your field hasn't changed much, but, as you begin your job search you're quickly discouraged by the response to your resume.  Those missing years make you seem less qualified for the job. What could you have done during your time out. The same things you can do now.  Seek out flexible, part-time or contract work in your field.  Those options allow you to work fewer hours and possibly at home supporting a company.  Most of all, you'll have a chance to keep your skills sharp and gain experience to put on your resume.  You're out of the full-time rat race, doing what you want to do and  still earning money and building your resume.

Do you know how to effectively put your current skills to work in another field?

You may need to change your career in order to get right back into work.  You can do this a couple ways.  One, you may want to use skills from your previous career to create a new career.  For instance, a teacher can become a tutor.  A woman who worked in a Public Relations and Advertising firm choosing not to return to that fast-paced and very demanding world decides to start her own company helping small businesses get the publicity they need.  This is an area of great need for many small businesses.  An option like this allows you to make your own hours and take on only the workload you can handle.  You may even consider teaching in your field at your community college. You can do evening classes or create a schedule that doesn't require five workdays.

Two, you may have become interested in a new field or want to brainstorm to discover your new calling.  It's likely that you'll need to evaluate the skills you have that will apply in the new career and discover what new skills you'll need to learn.   Returning to the plan for re-entry, we encourage you to take advantage of advice, career information and more. Your desire should not turn to frustration because you feel unprepared to return to work.  We’ll show you how to find your dream career through assessments. We have worked with many women just like you.  Our experience enables us to help you successfully re-enter the workforce.  We’ll show you how to put ALL your experiences to work for you. You will learn how to find your dream career and be empowered to re-enter the work world.  It’s time to get energized about going back to work after children.

Balancing work and family life can be a challenge.  We have compiled some useful tools to help sort through your financial questions. Our free e-book has 20 pages of advice and tips for working and supporting your family.
